July 15-20, 2023, in the forests of Deão, Portugal [Just north of Porto]
🔥
Somewhere is an ongoing experiment on exploring the possible. Burns have always been about pioneering, going against the default, and challenging norms. We continue this tradition at Somewhere, and welcome any feedback and involvement in governance from those who participate in co-creating this experience. We don't expect this to be for everyone, to make everyone happy. Nowhere is. As is tradition, we invite you to channel judgment into the passion of creating what you do want to see in the world, as we do together, here.

💙 Consent
We live in a complex, touch-deprived culture and much of the cultural fringes we together explore here are outside of societal norms around touch.
It is safe to assume that we cannot know the ‘stories’ of the bodies we encounter at Somewhere, no matter how well we think we know those stories.
Proceed consciously and with deep listening. Do not assume that your partner is skilled at setting boundaries and establishing consent and don't assume that touch is always desired.
👂
You are entrusted with the responsibility to communicate your own boundaries, as well as to be sensitive to the verbal and non-verbal boundaries and cues of each person at this gathering.
  • Boundaries can change, and consent may be reversed or altered at any time: Permission now is not permission in the future.
  • Take extra care around giving your own consent, or accepting the consent of another if you are on psychoactive substances.
  • If ever you are uncertain, just ask/tell! It is safest to never assume.
  • Feel free to communicate verbally with your fellow somebodies at any time, especially if there is ambiguity around consent.
  • It’s always ok to say “No” or “Stop”. You can always leave an interaction.
  • There is no need to apologise for, accommodate, or explain your ‘no’.
🏕️ Packing List
Toilets
We provide all the poopey things. Toilet paper + flushing toilets. Yay! (However, no toilets that flush toilet paper!)
We do not provide showers.
Water
There is potable water flowing on site, but we can't guarantee that it will be enough for everyone or that the quality will be the best. It’s a burn. Plan to bring your own water for drinking.
Weather
Expect sun and clouds with a chance of rain. Warm clothes for night. Sometimes when it rains here, it absolutely pours.

Toilet paper for the toilets is provided!

Apart from that, please practice self-reliance. Please don’t bring alcohol, anything smokeable, camp fires, or glitter 🙏 Camping is in the forest and there is ample shade. Arrive early for the flattest and most shaded spots 🪨

🗂️ Transparency
Somewhere is committed to transparency and will publish our income and expenditures.
This is a non-commercial, donation and volunteer driven, fully participatory gathering organised by the Portuguese non-profit cultural association: GARDEN, ASSOCIAÇÃO PARA DESENVOLVIMENTO TECNOLÓGICO E CULTURAL.
🔦 Theme Camps
🏕️ Secure Your Spot! Theme Camp Registration Form If you are an artist or a member of a theme camp and plan to transport a significant amount of equipment in your vehicle for a public-facing installation, you may be eligible for a free parking pass.
🔍 Internet & Phone
There is cell network of varying speeds throughout the site. You should be able to get an SMS, basic call, or email out at the least.
🔥 Absolutely No Fire
No fires allowed. It's dry season in a verdant forest, fires are prohibited during this time and we don't want police knocking at the gate or to burn down the mountainside.

🦠 Coronavirus Cashmonavirus
Somewhere plans to rapid antigen test all attendees on arrival. This is not a bulletproof precaution, but it has worked in the past and minimizes risk.

In order to ensure entry, we recommend taking a rapid test before you begin your travel to Somewhere.

Context:

This decision is not one we take lightly. Last year, Somewhere expressed that we may test attendees on arrival, but given the state of the pandemic at the time and the logistics and politics involved, we chose not to.  This resulted in a super-spreader event, where most of the festival became positive for COVID, which then resulted in negative medical complications, many people having to book last minute Airbnbs nearby, miss their flights home or ongoing travel plans, etc.  Somewhere is a global nexus and rendezvous from many countries and the complexities and cost involved in this were significant. Later in the year the Garden Association successfully conducted an event of similar size with rapid testing on arrival. 2% of attendees tested positive for COVID and were denied entry.  There was no outbreak and the event went smoothly

Protocol:

If you test positive, you'll be given two more tests. If either of those is positive, it is assumed that you are positive for COVID and you will be asked to go away. You will be refunded fully for your ticket and vehicle pass. Please understand that there is risk associated with attending an event such as this! Consider taking precautions such as good sleep, mRNA vaccination, diet, unproven supplements, exercise, being young, having had covid a bunch of times already, maintaining a positive outlook on life, etc.
